History

As with every service organization the Lions Club relies on members of our community to become Lions to accomplish our community projects and vision work.

The Clarkesville Lions Club began 87 years ago when like-mined businessmen and friends gathered to find ways of brining business, growth, and jobs to Habersham.  Lions Club members were instrumental in helping procure the Clarkesville Mill, The Community House and Field, Scovill, Habersham Medical Center, and the cannery.  For many years the club supported the Scouts, purchased playground equipment for Pitts Park, and gave a substantial amount toward the heliport at the hospital.

Locally, we purchase glasses for those (particularly children) who cannot afford them, contribute to the Georgia Lions Lighthouse, where surgeries are performed, send kids to the Georgia Camp for the Blind for a week in the Summer, help procure dogs for service through Leader Dog, support the food kitchen, and support LCIF (Lions Club International Foundation) where millions over the world are helped with medical needs, disaster relief, cataract surgeries and inoculations against disease.

Three members went on to become District Governor:

H.O. Carlton 1955-1956

Conny Shirley 1982-1983

Beverly Shirley 2005-2006
